The Vascular Surgery Unit is actively engaged in clinical and translational research aimed at improving the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of complex vascular diseases through evidence-based innovation and multidisciplinary collaboration.

Our research focuses primarily on advanced aortic interventions, with particular interest in optimizing the outcomes of endovascular and hybrid procedures. We actively participate in international and multicenter collaborative studies, including the GORE Together Registry, which provides real-world data on the safety, durability, and clinical performance of contemporary endovascular technologies for complex aortic pathologies. In parallel, we contribute to a large multicenter retrospective study investigating the incidence, risk factors, and clinical impact of intraluminal thrombosis following Frozen Elephant Trunk (FET) and Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR), with the goal of improving patient selection, perioperative management, and long-term surveillance.

A second major area of investigation explores the pathophysiological links between chronic pulmonary disease and vascular disorders. In close collaboration with pulmonologists, our research examines the inflammatory, immune, and mechanical mechanisms connecting chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), smoke-related arteriopathy, cardiovascular disease, and cancer progression. This multidisciplinary approach aims to identify shared biological pathways that may support earlier diagnosis, improved risk stratification, and the development of more personalized therapeutic strategies.

Overall, our research program integrates clinical expertise, international collaboration, and translational investigation to address unmet challenges in vascular surgery. By combining high-quality clinical data with a multidisciplinary scientific perspective, we strive to improve patient outcomes, advance knowledge of vascular disease, and contribute to the development of innovative treatment strategies for complex cardiovascular conditions.
